10 Self Care Tips You Can Use Today to Feel More Emotionally Well

Self care, for me, is all about taking good care of your mind, body and soul to attain a balance and a state of inner harmony. Once you are at inner harmony, you would be able to live life to the fullest and also understand what it means to be truly healthy from inside out.

 

We all can have different perspectives towards wellness. But the essence remains the same: to stay happy, healthy and peaceful.

Of course, I was not the one advocating selfcare habits and wellness routines a few years back. My day was all about sleeping in till noon, eating junk all the time, and staying up late binge watching my favorite shows. I did not follow a routine life aimed at my overall wellness and fitness.

What changed my habits? What inspired me to start a blog on nutrition, fitness and wellness.

Why I Blog About Wellness and Self Care

Sometimes we need to learn the hard way. I suffered from hair loss, weight loss, and undernourishment for few years. It took some time for me to realize my state, and do something about it. It was time for me to work on my overall wellness and fitness. And I did.

I did change my routine. I changed my sleep cycle, food habits, skin care habits. And this lifestyle inspired me to learn more and more about nutrition and fitness, and start my own blog.

Steps For Self Care

You need 7-8 hours of sleep.

One of the most common suggestions we get from almost everyone. And, yes it can not be stated enough how important it is to have a good night’s sleep.

 

-gives your body time to rejuvenate for the next day

-increases productivity

-recovers your skin

reduces dark circles

 

One of the best ways to sleep early is to start early in the morning. Get into a habit of getting up early and sleeping early as well. And trust me, you will feel the difference. Of course, some of us are able to manage with 6 hours of sleep as well. So, find your balance, find what your body needs.

Having a night time routine boosts the benefits of a good night’s sleep

When we sleep, it’s a good time for our body to start repairing. And if we maintain a routine of night time habits, it will reinforce the process of repair.

  • -Eat light at night and do not sleep just after eating. Give time for food to digest and then sleep
  • -Drink lots of water before you go to sleep to keep yourself hydrated
  • -Follow a skin-care regime. Your skin needs good care and repair during the night
  • -Stay away from your phones/laptops/ipads/etc. give your mind some rest before bed
  • -Try to get into the habit of reading in bed before sleep.

    A positive start to the day

    Having a morning routine is the key to having a productive day. The way we treat our body and mind in the morning reflects on how our body and mind treat us throughout the day. Simply put, if you are not providing the right fuel to your body in the morning, it will affect your engine’s performance in the middle of the day. 

    Start with baby steps:

  • -Set an alarm to get up early and please don’t snooze it. It just makes it more difficult.
  • -Drink lots and lots and lots of water
  • -Get some fresh air and sunlight
  • -Engage for at least half an hour in workout, meditation or yoga, or whatever works the best for you.
  • -Give some healthy fuel to your body. And a wholesome breakfast that provides your body with essential proteins, vitamins, fiber, minerals to kickstart your day. Meal prep in advance to avoid last minute bad nutritional decisions.
  • -And one of the most underrated yet most important, spend some quality time with your family. Connect with people who matter, share your plans for the day, any issues you are having at your work. As the saying goes, ‘Sharing is Caring’. So, share, care and get rid of all the negative thoughts.
  • Skin-care routine

    What you eat works from the inside, but what products you apply on your skin directly affects from the outside. And wellness as a concept brings together both. Cleanse, tone and moisturize twice a day.

    Green & Clean – how it promotes  thinking

    From my personal experience, if you live in a messy environment, your mind will not be at ease to do something productive. Your mind needs peace, relaxation, and a soothing environment to think. To introspect and explore yourself, you should create a minimalist home filled with plants, aroma candles, some soothing music or whatever makes you calm. Your mind will be so relaxed that it will function at its best.

    Why do you think you feel so fresh after a meditation or a spa session? You will find yourself in the best position to think and come up with some creative ideas.

    Meal prep for the day/week

    As mentioned earlier, since our body needs a nutritious meal throughout the day, it is crucial to prep in advance. We all have various other tasks planned for the day so if we don’t plan our meals, we will resort to easy-to-make unhealthy foods.

    Tips for meal prep:

  • -Use a checklist to prep your meals for the week (from breakfast to dinner)
  • -Make a grocery list based on your food preferences as well as the meals you added in your checklist for the week. You don’t wanna eat instant noodles, just because you forgot to buy some sprouts
  • -Prepare some of the meals in advance and store them for the week. Food items such as oatmeal cookies, granola bars, frozen smoothie packs don’t go bad in a day. You can make them in batches on weekends to thank yourself on the weekdays.
  • Find a hobby that makes you happy – learn how to treat yourself with some me time

    You may like photography, music, long pampering baths, cooking, painting,  reading books, and writing articles. Find what you enjoy the most and ensure you make time for that activity. It is essential to have some me time because we all are working the whole day for our business or 9 to 5 jobs.

    So,when do you find time to explore our creative personality, to find what we like? Don’t ignore yourself and what you enjoy.

    Make some hard choices: Satisfy your craving with healthy choices.

    If you want to stay healthy, you need to cut some food items out of your life. One of the most difficult to cut food item is sugar. Its not easy to just completely cut unhealthy foods out of your life. Start with reducing the intake of processed foods, one to two food items at a time. And simultaneously, try to find healthy substitutes for the food items you are cutting off. This will help make the transition smooth and easy. 

    For instance, pasta cooked in tomato soup instead of being loaded with ready made processed tomato ketchup high in sugar. You get the same flavor in a healthier way. It is all about finding healthy food swaps.

    Learn to say No – you don’t need to please everyone. 

    Surround yourself with select few friends and family that matter to you and that’s it. Why? Because you can’t keep everyone happy at the cost of your mental health. It is very important to cut some people out of your life. 

    These are the people who don’t give you positive vibes, people who demotivate you, people who keep you from growing and shining. You should learn to say ‘No’ and move on. 

    Maintain Journals

    Track your progress to gain confidence. Record the changes

    Practice a wellness routine and see if it works. If it does not work, make some tweaks. If we don’t record our progress, it may take a long time to realize we are doing something wrong.
