Mother’s Day has become quite the production. Social media is partly to blame for this. You can log onto Pinterest and create a board dedicated to the perfect Mother’s Day. You can pick out special recipes, select gift ideas, and pin ideas for DIY crafts for your children. We forget that this holiday is by no means a reflection on motherhood itself.
What does motherhood mean to you?
Motherhood can mean
- Cooking healthier foods
- Sleeping less often
- Learning patience
- Reading Peppa Pig books over and over again
- Feeling dead on your feet
- Losing a piece of yourself
- Growing in ways you could never imagine
Motherhood means so much. Even those who are not mothers themselves find meaning in their relationships to those who are. We can even be mothers to our friends at times!
Mother’s Day is never (or rarely) going to be perfect. After all, when is parenting?
You are likely never going to have a Mother’s Day where you wouldn’t change a thing. I just don’t believe it’s possible. My day was very nice. I got a great gift (something I wanted), and spent some time with my husband, kids, and immediate family. Was it perfect? Absolutely not!
As soon as we shatter the illusion of a perfect Mother’s Day, we can take steps toward shattering that of a perfect mother. We can stop playing the comparison game, looking at the moms on our Facebook newsfeed and wondering how they seem to have it all together when you are struggling to even put on deodorant every day.
Give yourself grace, and allow your Mother’s Day some of that grace, as well.
I would love to know what motherhood means to you in the comments! I hope you had a wonderful day celebrating you 💗
