How clean is your home right now? Is it a constant work in progress like mine? I swear, I am always looking for ways to up my cleaning game. With two kids 4 and under, a dog, and a cat, my house gets legit so messy and dirty. I’m a bit of a clean freak, but busy juggling these kiddos, so the quicker and easier the better.
I need something that cleans well and does not leave me worrying about harsh chemical ingredients because let’s face it: I have too much on my mind for that nonsense. I don’t need the added worries about the products I use.
Thankfully, I got introduced to Thieves cleaner in late 2016, after a good friend recommended I look into the dangers of “normal” cleaning products. I did, and yikes! Brace yourself, it can be a bit scary and overwhelming, but as they say, knowledge is power.
Did you know…
- Conventional cleaners have been linked to respiratory disease with long term use?
- Using them during and after pregnancy affects your kiddos as well?
- The ingredient “fragrance” contains allergens and hormone disruptors?

According to another articles, conventional cleaning products are as bad for you as smoking cigarettes. Regular use of the products has similar effects to smoking a pack of cigarettes a day. They found that it is especially harmful for women’s lungs.

Enter: Thieves Cleaner. My white knight in a plastic bottle.
It is a wonderful product from Young Living and has ZERO yuck. I had an 18 month old at the time I started using it and I was pregnant with our second child. So, I was starting to be a little more cognizant of the products I was using. Reading the research above freaked me out, but when you know better, you can do better!
Reasons to use Thieves cleaner
–No fragrance. As I mentioned above, the word “fragrance” on a list of ingredients is a no-no. It is linked to so many health issues so I have been on a quest to remove it from my home.
–Cleans everything. I seriously use it on everything except laundry and dishes. All surfaces, including glass and carpet! So it saves you the hassle of juggling a billion bottles every time you clean.
–Money saver. Because it is all I use, I save money by not having to buy a separate cleaner for glass and my tub and my toilet and my carpet. This one bottle does it all. For about $22, a 14.4 ounce bottle of Thieves cleaner lasts for several months. It is a concentrate, so you dilute it with water in a separate spray bottle.
–Safe for kiddos and pets. This is so important for this mama! My kids have literally sprayed themselves in the face with it while “helping” me clean. Not only did I not worry about any negative side effects of that, but NOTHING HAPPENED. Besides them having cleaner all over their face.
–Smells amazing. It is a mix of clove, cinnamon, rosemary, and eucalyptus, and smells so good. That was another reason I was falling out of love with conventional cleaners. Don’t you hate that headache inducing “clean smell” that reminds you of being in a hospital? Yeah, me too. Thieves cleaner smells like a lovely fall day. Who doesn’t love the smell of cinnamon?
–You can earn points back by ordering it. With my Young Living membership, I order the things I need on a monthly order (supplements, essential oils, laundry soap, etc.) and I get points back every time. I have worked up to a 25% rewards rate, so I get free dollars back each month. (Ex. If I spend $100, I get 25 points placed in my account. Each point roughly equates to $1 that I can spend later.) This mama loves freebies!
Thieves cleaner hacks
- Add a half cap full to a bowl of warm water as an all natural jewelry cleaner
- For extra cleaning boost, add a quarter or half cap full to your laundry with the detergent. (I recommend Thieves laundry soap for the same reason I recommend the cleaner. No yucky ingredients!)
- You can do the same thing in your dishwasher. Throw in a half cap for an extra boost.
- Use it to clean your appliances! Instead of a toxin filled washing machine cleaner, drop in a cap full of Thieves cleaner and run the hot cycle. It will be sparkly clean!
- You can put it in a glass spray bottle and add lemon essential oil for extra cleaning power.
What did we learn?
As you can see from the facts at the beginning, it is very important to start being more aware of the products we are using in our homes. With long term use, these cleaning products really are quite damaging. They can affect our lungs, our hormones, and more. Worst of all, they can affect our children.
There is a lot of misleading information out there about what is “safe.” (Google “greenwashing.”) Do your research, and find a product you can trust. That’s what I did. That’s why I use Thieves cleaner.
Has anyone here ever tried it? If not, and you are interested, shoot me a message and I will tell you how you can snag a bottle for yourself. (I do not recommend buying one on Amazon or through “buy sell trade” sites because it is not reputable and they can easily be tampered with.)
