Book review: Medical Medium (3rd Installment)

Sharing is caring!

Do you suffer from chronic illness? Do your symptoms leave doctors baffled, and you drowning in frustration?

This book is a comprehensive tome on mystery illness and how you can finally heal.

If you missed my previous posts about the book, you can catch up here: Installment 1 & Installment 2

*Again, I want to stress. I am not a doctor. Anthony William is not a doctor. I am not suggesting you make any sort of diagnosis or treatment plan without doing further research. But this might be a good jumping off point!*

Since the first installment of this blog series was published, I had a kind person reach out to me and tell me how life changing William’s teachings have been for her.

That I was totally wrong about my initial assessment of William’s knowledge and character.

Rather than put my tail between my legs and abandon this series of posts, it made me more committed to uncovering the truth, and to answering the question: Can I finally heal?

Mystery Illness Demystified

Part 3 of the book dives into other mystery illnesses previously not covered. Here is what William asserts, and his recommendations.

Type 2 Diabetes and hypoglycemia

“The fundamental fuel for your body is glucose, a simple sugar that provides all your cells with the energy they need to function, heal, grow, and thrive.” (Medical Medium, 91)

So, what does glucose do exactly?

  • It feeds our central nervous system
  • It feeds our organs
  • Glucose helps us build and sustain muscle
  • It helps our body repair damaged tissue and cells

I never really understood why glucose was so important but he lays it out pretty simply. Ya body needs glucose.

I also didn’t know that your pancreas helps body get access to the glucose by creating insulin. (Raise your hand if you never knew what your pancreas did. No? Just me?)

The facts

William states that 35 million Americans have type 2 diabetes (when pancreas doesn’t make enough insulin or you are resistant to insulin), Another 95 million have prediabetes. 35% of those with prediabetes will have type 2 diabetes within 6 years.

Here is how he explains the origins of diabetes. This was pretty interesting!

Adrenaline resulting from stress wears away at pancreas. This leads to either diabetes, or not enough adrenaline production. In either case, the pancreas works too hard, which results in an inflamed/enlarged pancreas.

Phew. Can’t say you didn’t learn something today! Here are some more facts:

  • Hypoglycemia is a precursor to T2D, so he says it has the same origins.
  • Liver and pancreas are strained more by fats than sugar. That strain leads to insulin resistance, which means sugar is not driven to your cells adequately for energy.
  • Diets high in animal fat (even lean meats) strain your liver.
  • Fatty diety + lots of stress/negative emotions lead to an overworked pancreas and can result in type 2 diabetes.

Healing foods recommended

Here are the foods he recommends. He usually lists them in order of importance (most to least).

  • Wild blueberries (he stresses the importance of “wild” vs conventional)
  • Spinach
  • Celery
  • Papayas
  • Sprouts
  • Kale
  • Raspberries
  • Asparagus

(Williams recommends you avoid dairy, eggs, processed oils, and all sugars except fruit and raw honey.)

Recommended supplements

He says to try from this list of supplements to help manage your type 2 diabetes.

  • Zinc
  • Chromium
  • Spirulina (preferrably from hawaii)
  • Ester-C
  • ALA (apha lipoic acid)
  • Silica
  • Purslane
  • Eleuthero (siberian ginseng)
  • Panax ginseng
  • Epa and dha (plant-based not fish-based)

Adrenal Fatigue

Our adrenal glands produce vital hormones: adrenaline, cortisol, and sex hormones. This book honestly taught me a lot about how my body works.

Adrenal activity is typically triggered by stress.

Did you know…? Postpartum fatigue and depression are the result of too much adrenaline during childbirth. That causes adrenal gland exhaustion, meaning you can’t produce the right hormones at the right times.

It can go back and forth— which are like the mood swings in bipolar disorder.

William states that 80% of us will experience adrenal fatigue multiple times in our lives.

Common symptoms

  • Weakness
  • Low energy
  • Trouble concentrating
  • Forgetfulness
  • Trouble finishing things
  • Hoarse voice
  • Digestive issues
  • Constipation
  • Depression
  • Insomnia
  • Poor quality sleep
  • Need to nap more

Basically, when your adrenal glands are fatugued, it effects other organs. For example, an pancreas inflamed from working overtime to compensate for adrenal mishap. Or maybe an underperforming thyroid.

Here are more signs you might have adrenal fatigue:

Do you “crash” often?

Do you feel tired all day working but energized when relaxing?

Poor REM sleep or trouble falling asleep?

Feel unrested even after full night’s sleep?

Have you been sweating more?

These could all point to issues with your adrenal glands. Again, I am not a doctor but these things are always worth asking about!

How to avoid adrenal fatigue?

Avoiding stress is key! He also recommends the following:

  • Try to avoid caffeine
  • Avoid strong negative emotions (let them arise and pass vs suppressing or engaging with them)
  • Graze every 1.5-2 hrs (potassium + sodium + sugar)— For example, half an avocado + spinach + orange

Healing foods recommended

William recommends the following foods to help you through your adrenal fatigue:

  • Sprouts
  • Asparagus
  • Wild blueberries
  • Bananas
  • Garlic
  • Broccoli
  • Kale
  • Raspberries
  • Blackberries
  • Romaine
  • Red apples

Recommended supplements

Definitely read up on these if the above symptoms sound like you!

  • Licorice root
  • Spirulina (preferrably from hawaii)
  • Ester-C
  • Chromium
  • Eleuthero (siberian ginseng)
  • See the book for a ton more suggestions!

The Candida myth

This is something we chronically ill people read and hear a lot about. So what exactly is Candida? What does it mean for your health?

William asserts that it kind of became a catch all in the 90s when doctors were trying to explain a lot of mystery illness. Essentially, it is a beneficial fungus that helps digestion and in itself harmless. He says it’s only a health issue for less than 0.1% of people.

The majority of the myth lies in the medical lie that Candida leads to leaky gut. At most, an overgrowth of it poses mild digestive issues.

More facts about Candida

It does feed on sugar but not all sugar is the same (sugar from fruit is healing and antiparasitic/antibacterial).

Fat and protein feed Candida more than sugar.

Proteins/fats bind to intestines and damages your immune system.

In the age of Keto, that is a pretty big bomb to drop!

This was a ton of info, so thanks for hanging in there. Again, this is all meant to be a jumping off point for those suffering from chronic illness.

I do not know if the things Anthony William writes about are correct. I’m still exploring all of this. I do not know if will reading this book will definitively heal you.

What I do know is that when a person has been sick for a long time, and they are not getting better, it is worth keeping an open mind. It is worth humbling yourself and exploring other options. Your quality of life might depend on it.

  1. Lots of information to digest, but I understand the gist of his teachings. And you have a great post on the highlights of the book. I am headed to make a blueberry smoothie with almond milk! So important to fuel your body with the right foods.

  2. This is an interesting post. It’s crazy how much food and vitamins could help. I have chronic pain from a mild traumatic brain injury and it can be hard to find relief

    1. Chronic pain is so hard! I figure, most people would be willing to try any crazy thing. And eating more fruits and veggies can’t really hurt.
